Stay in a hotel with a human hamster wheel in Nantes
Rod Chaytor stays in a hotel with a human hamster wheel in Nantes, France’s capital of crazy culture
Where can you ride a 40ft-high mechanical elephant and spend the night as a human hamster?
The answer is Nantes, the former seaport on the River Loire near the French Atlantic coast and just a morning’s drive from the ports of St Malo and Caen.
It has reinvented itself as a cultural capital with a slightly wacky feel.
Villa Hamster, a 205sq ft apartment, renting out at about £88 a night, features living space with a 9ft hamster wheel and a tube-like staircase leading to a sleeping platform above. Alternatively, you can stay in a tiny one-up one-down detached house atop a mock red-and-white striped factory chimney. And when you’re not trying out the unconventional accommodation that is available in this oddball city, you can visit the tourist attractions, some of which are equally off the wall.
